Robert Treat Knowles letters, 1917-1919.

Letters written by Robert Treat Knowles while serving with the Phillips Academy Red Cross Unit assisting the American Ambulance Field Service in France during the first World War, 28 Apr.- 1 Nov. 1917. Letters addressed to his father and mother, William and Charlotte, sister Katharine Knowles, cousin Melita Knowles and other family members describe his ocean passage to France, impressions of various cities, and military duties; and details the movement of his ambulance troop, visiting men in the trenches, and skirmishes. Also includes Robert's passport; lists of French vocabulary and items to bring to the field; postcards and clippings; and copies of the American Field Service Bulletin, 1918-19. Most of the letters were transcribed by Robert's daughter, Whitney Treat Knowles Hardy in 1998.
